What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture is a unique relationship of mutual support and commitment between the farmer and the member.  You purchase a share of the season’s harvest in advance.  Your investment plays a major roll in supporting farmers at the leaner time of the year.  CSA’s help pay for the seeds, soil amendments, and tools at the beginning of the farming season, when a majority of the spending happens all at once. In return, we commit to providing you with healthy, locally grown food throughout the growing season.  This interdependence helps to ensure the longevity of small farms, while also reconnecting people to the land that helps to sustain them.

What’s the difference between a box CSA and a golden ticket CSA?

Both styles have their own benefits.  Both options result in the best selection of delicious veggies for you during the growing season. A box CSA is exactly that, you pick up a box full of veggies each week!  Need more details?

A golden ticket CSA is a credit at the farm market stand.  You get to shop for what you want at either of our markets.

What is a CSA Share?

Vegetable CSA: The Summer CSA harvest season is scheduled for 20 weeks, June through October.  The Vegetable Share consists of 8-10 different homegrown vegetables each week. The Vegetable Share is structured to feed an average family of 4 but this will vary depending on eating habits.  Many vegetarian adults find that the share is perfect for a family of 2.

One share is about one half-bushel of produce per week for 20 weeks beginning in mid-June. In your box, you will find a full variety of crops we harvest each week at that point in the season.

Golden Ticket: an alternative way to purchase vegetables at a discount. Like the vegetable CSA, the Golden ticket program allows you to help support our farm in the early part of the season by paying in advance for credit to be used at the farmers market. Each share gives you extra money to spend during market season and can be spent on any item that is in stock at the farmers market. When purchasing a golden ticket CSA, keep in mind:

  • $200 CSA = $225 market credit
  • $500 CSA = $575 market credit

Market Credit must be used up by the end of October each year.

When and where do I pick up my CSA Share?

We will email you to let you know when we start market. Once we start market, we can be found Fridays and Saturdays at the Fulton Street Farmers Market in downtown Grand Rapids. Shares can be picked up at the market on either day.

Benefits of being a B.F.F. CSA member

Being a CSA member is extremely rewarding.  You get to appreciate all the benefits of fresh picked (chemical-free) produce.  There is no comparison to farm fresh locally produced vegetables!  The flavors are so intense, sometimes you feel like you are tasting something for the very first time.   You also get to enjoy each vegetable in its prime season. Each CSA share also includes an insulated BFF tote bag to carry all of your weekly goodies.

What will I receive in my share?

Each week, you'll receive a variety of fresh vegetables from what we are harvesting from our fields. Your share might include seasonal combinations of...

Arugula, beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, edible flowers, eggplant, garlic and garlic scapes, greens, herbs, leeks, lettuce, melons, onions, potatoes, radishes, sweet and hot peppers, spinach, spring lettuce mix, strawberries, summer squash, tomatoes, turnips, watermelon, winter squash, and zucchini.

Brokaw Family Farms will act in good faith to provide the freshest homegrown produce for the 20 week season. Farming is dependent upon nature and there can be no guarantee of quantities or contents of CSA shares. Each year the Shares will vary with the season and availability due to growing conditions.

All of the Vegetables are rinsed upon harvesting but may need a final wash before using.
